Cornish Cracker
The Christmas cracker started as a sweet. In 1847 a London confectioner called Tom Smith came home from Paris with the bonbon, a sugared almond twisted in tissue paper, and sold it with a love motto tucked inside. The bang came later. The story goes he was staring at a log fire, heard it crack, and spent the next decade working out how to put that sound in a paper wrapper. The sweet shrank, the hat and the joke arrived, and the cracker has been slightly disappointing ever since. Ours has a bottle of Cornish ale in it. We think Tom would approve.
