Lightning in a dark glass. Blitzen is a 4.0% porter brewed with six malts, deep and rich, with a liquorice sweetness set against dark chocolate and the slightest hint of salt at the edge. The stag on the label is named for lightning. The beer is quieter than that: smooth, warming, and gone before you expect.
Named
for Lightning
Blitzen is the eighth reindeer, named in the 1823 poem that gave Santa his sleigh. The first printing called him Blixem, Dutch for lightning and a mild New York swear word of the day. The German Blitzen came later, because it rhymed better with Vixen. A stag under the northern lights, a name that means lightning, and a porter that drinks like the long nights: slow, deep and worth sitting in. Two units a bottle, so the lightning is in the name only.
